چکیده

The organization of the motoneurons that control the indirect flight muscles of the foreand hindwings was investigated in the corn earworm, Heliothis zea (Boddie). Cut axons of the nerves supplying the dorsolongitudinal and dorsoventral muscles were infiltrated with cobalt chloride. The cell bodies of the labeled motoneurons are located throughout all thoracic ganglia. Their respective dendritic fields are organized similarly and distributed in a segmented fashion, i.e., the somata and dendrites are restricted to a rather narrow region of the neuropil. The relevance of this organization for the neural basis of behavior is discussed, focusing on the divergent axonal terminations of primary afferents of the acoustic and mechanoreceptive sensory systems.

Studies of the Neural Basis of Evasive Flight Behavior in Response to Acoustic Stimulation in Heliothis zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): Organization of the Tympanic Nerves

Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 81(6): 977-985 (1988) ABSTRACT The organization of the tympanic nerve within the thoracic ganglia of Heliothis zea (Boddie) was investigated. Cobalt chloride infiltration of cut axons was used to investigate the central terminations of the tympanic nerves. The axonal terminals of the A2 acoustic cell were confined to the meso-metathoracic ganglia, whereas the Al acoustic ...

Attraction of Heliothis belladonna (Henry and Edwards) to the Sex Pheromone of the Corn Earworm Moth, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Several males of Heliothis belladonna (Henry and Edwards) were initially captured in traps baited with commercial pheromone lures for the corn earworm moth, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). Significant numbers of H. belladonna moths were subsequently captured in traps baited with a 4-component blend of corn earworm pheromone composed of Z-11-hexadecenal, Z-9-hexadecenal, Z-7-hexadecenal, and hexadecen...

Automatic tuning of a behavior-based guidance algorithm for formation flight of quadrotors

This paper presents a tuned behavior-based guidance algorithm for formation flight of quadrotors. The behavior-based approach provides the basis for the simultaneous realization of different behaviors such as leader following and obstacle avoidance for a group of agents; in our case they are quadcopters. In this paper optimization techniques are utilized to tune the parameters of a behavior-bas...

Acoustic Aposematism and Evasive Action in Select Chemically Defended Arctiine (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) Species: Nonchalant or Not?

Tiger moths (Erebidae: Arctiinae) have experienced intense selective pressure from echolocating, insectivorous bats for over 65 million years. One outcome has been the evolution of acoustic signals that advertise the presence of toxins sequestered from the moths' larval host plants, i.e. acoustic aposematism. Little is known about the effectiveness of tiger moth anti-bat sounds in their natural...

Female pheromones modulate flight muscle activation patterns during preflight warm-up.

At low ambient temperature Helicoverpa zea male moths engage in warm-up behavior prior to taking flight in response to an attractive female pheromone blend. Male H. zea warm up at a faster rate when sensing the attractive pheromone blend compared with unattractive blends or blank controls (Crespo et al. 2012), but the mechanisms involved in this olfactory modulation of the heating rate during p...
